Often, for parents, the most common way to sit down face to face and discuss issues with teachers is during a parent – teacher meeting. We believe that these ideas can help you navigate these meetings better. Often, these meetings are mere formalities to complain about each other for extended periods. These are not productive ways.

Before the meeting:

  • Talk to your child and ask them if they have any concerns about their school or teachers
  • Find out what your child might be okay with discussing and what they will not be
  • Prepare a list of questions that you need to discuss with the teachers in a notepad
  • Focus beyond academics. Your child’s happiness and well-being is more important their grades

During the meeting:

  • Stay calm and composed during the meeting. Do not get defensive when you hear negative information.
  • Avoid blame games and instead, focus on solutions that will help your child. See how you can contribute to help this
  • Avoid scolding or beating your child over complaints. Punishment in general and particularly punishments in public will erode your child’s trust in you. Respect them as you would expect to be respected
  • Ask your concerns first before addressing minor issues
  • If you feel you do not have enough time to discuss, schedule another meeting instead of hastening the process

After the conference:

  • Compliment your child on their successes
  • Discuss possible solutions with your child and make sure that they are comfortable with them. Change the solutions if needed
  • Try to document the changes and take them forward to review it with the teachers at the next meeting

These simple tips will help you in having a more productive parent-teacher meeting. The education and well-being of your child is a partnership effort and it is necessary to treat it as such. Hope this helps.

Reflective Teaching is a process where teachers think over their teaching practices, analyzing how something was taught and how the practice might be improved or changed for better learning outcomes. This kind of self-awareness is a powerful ally for a teacher, especially when so much of what and how they teach can change in the moment.

Reflective teaching is about more than just summarizing what happened in the classroom.

It is a quieter and more systemic approach to looking at what happened. It requires patience, and careful observation of the entire lesson's experience.

Reflective teaching is an excellent approach to overall qualitative improvement of the teacher's attitude towards teaching and offers them a chance to shape young minds in more effective and fun ways.
